Manjushree Thanka Painting

Manjushree in Tibetan is known as Djampelyang meaning “Sweet and glorious melody”. He personifies the Knowledge, as well as the absolute truth that the world on which we operate. It is therefore particularly revered by those who engage in the study. Manjushri represents the Knowledge and Wisdom of God.

His attributes are the sword, a double-edged weapon of knowledge that cut the sails of ignorance, and the sacred text of the Prajnaparamita a book containing the teachings of Buddha on the ultimate nature of things.

Ignorance which is mainly question here is the true nature of things, blindness that prevents us both to distinguish what is real from what is not and to understand the interrelationships that govern any event. Ignorance is still compared to the darkness which is why the tip of the sword of Manjushri is surrounded by a flame whose light dispels the darkness. The complete obliteration of the veil of ignorance is the state of Buddha, with the “omniscience”.
